Maria Hinojosa, award winning journalist and host of National Public Radio’s Latino USA as well as senior correspondent for the Emmy Award-winning PBS news-magazine NOW was the featured speaker at the Latino Leaders Luncheon Series™ on November 6, 2007. Born in Mexico City, Hinojosa graduated magna cum laude from Barnard College and has received numerous awards for her NPR reports as well as for WNYC Radio. Hinojosa was named one of the 100 most influential Latinos in the United States by Hispanic Business for three years. Since then, Hinojosa has previously served as the urban affairs correspondent for CNN and a producer for CBS This Morning. Her work has elevated the issues and concerns of the Latino community to national attention and has helped pave the way for more Latino youth to aspire a career in or as a writer.

Wilmer Valderrama, Actor

Actor Wilmer Valderrama was the featured speaker at the very first Latino Leaders Youth Luncheon™ on October 11, 2007. From his early roles on network television to his breakthrough role on That 70′s Show, big screen acclaim, and his own production company, Valderrama inspires younger generations with his hard work, determination, and creative spirit. In honor of his accomplishments, Valderrama received HHF’s Youth Awards’ inaugural Inspira Award. Valderrama can be seen in the movie “Fast Food Nation,” the 2006 holiday feature “Unaccompanied Minors,” as well as the Sundance hit “The Darwin Awards.” He will be starring as Ponch in the movie-version of CHiPs.” Valderrama also served as the creator, producer and the voice of Latino children’s hero Manny Garcia in the animated Disney Channel series “Handy Manny.”

Omar Minaya, General Manager of the New York Mets

Omar Minaya, First Latino General Manager of a Major League Baseball team was the featured speaker at the Latino Leaders Luncheon Series™ on September 19, 2007. A native of the Dominican Republic, Minaya was named General Manager of the New York Mets in 2004. Since then the team’s record has soared, with the Mets winning the National League East in 2006 by 12 games, finishing first with a National-League-best and Major League-tied 97 wins. Credited with signing such players as Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran, Minaya is widely touted for building the Dream Team of Latino baseball superstars.

Susan Castillo, State of Oregon Superintendent

Superintendent Susan Castillo of the State of Oregon was the featured speaker at the Latino Leaders Luncheon Series™ on May 16, 2007. Superintendent Castillo was first elected in 2002 and began her second term in January of 2007 representing more than half-million students in over 1,200 public schools. While in office, Superintendent Castillo has worked diligently to improve education in the state by implementing measures of accountability, literally promotion and community involvement. Her work and passion have served to improve middle schools and high schools as they yield steady growth in reading and math performance moving the State of Oregon one step closer in closing the achievement gap.

Bill Richardson, New Mexico Governor

Governor Bill Richardson (D-NM) was the featured speaker at the Latino Leaders Luncheon Series™ on February 27, 2007. Bill Richardson was re-elected to a second term as Governor of New Mexico with the support of 69 percent of voters in 2006, representing the largest margin of victory for any Governor in state history. Last month he announced the formation of an exploratory committee for President of the U.S. He served as Secretary of Energy to President Bill Clinton, implementing tough efficiency standards to save energy and spent 14 years working in the United States Congress. He was also appointed by President Clinton as the Ambassador to the UN, receiving four nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work negotiating for the release of hostages, American servicemen and political prisoners in North Korea, Iraq, and Cuba.
