One of civil rights’ most legendary Hispanic leaders Dolores Huerta was honored by the Latino Leaders Network on November 17, 2008, the last of it’s 2008 luncheon series. The social justice advocate has dedicated 50 years to inspiring, organizing and motivating the Latino community on issues related to workers’ rights. “Her lifetime of advocacy on behalf of workers’ rights and social justice for the Latino community has improved the lives of many and inspired countless young Latinos…,” said LLN Founder and Chairman Mickey Ibarra.

Huerta, who co-funded the National Farm Workers Association with Cesar Chávez, was introduced by Congressman Rául Grijalva (D-AZ). Among the 500 guest, participation included Gabriela Lemus, Executive Director of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement and Congresswoman Hilda Solis (D-CA).

The Honorable Henry Bonilla, former Member of Congress, and Lionel Sosa, Republican presidential campaign strategist and author, were honored during the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis on September 2 at the Latino Leaders Network Luncheon(tm).

Bonilla served as a Member of Congress from 1993 to 2007. After his term in office expired he went on to become a member of The Normandy Group, a Washington based firm. LLN’s second honory, marketing guru Linonel Sosa, founder of Bromley Communications, the largest Hispanic advertising agency in the U.S., was honored for his expertise in Hispanic media marketing. In 2005 Time Magazine named him “One of the 25 most influential Hispanics in America.” He is also the author of Think and Grow Rich, a Latino Choice, among other books.

“Together, they (Bonilla and Sosa) have been two of the most influential Latinos in Republican politics and have advised every Republican presidential candidate over the past two decades,” says Founder and Chairman of LLN Mickey Ibarra.

Joining Mickey give tribute to Bonilla and Sosa were Luis Fortuno, the Puerto Rico Delegate Commissioner to Congress and Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and actress Rosario Dawson, co-founder of Voto Latino.

Former Mayor of Denver (1983-1991), the Honorable Federico Peña, was recognized for being a catalyst for the Latino community at the Latino Leaders Luncheon Series™ on August 26, 2008, in the Donald Seawell ballroom of Denver’s Performing Arts Complex. The luncheon was held in conjunction with the National Democratic Convention. Peña, who made history in Denver when he was elected as the state’s first Latino Mayor. He has been described as the “visionary man,” by
other prominent Hispanic leaders for calling on Denver’s voters in 1982 to “Imagine a Great City,” and then carrying out his mission in transforming Denver.

Peña was introduced by Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO) Others in the program included Governor Bill Richardson, Mayor Kenneth McClintock from Puerto Rico, Mayor John Hickenlooper of Denver, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, Texas Senator Leticia Van De Putte and National Council of La Raza’s President Janet Murguia.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina was the featured speaker at the Latino Leaders Luncheon Series™ on Wednesday, June 4th at the Capital Hilton, Washington, DC.  Gloria Molina was first elected to office in 1982 as State Assemblywoman for the 56th District. In 1987, she was elected to the Los Angeles City Council where she served as the Councilwoman of the First District until 1991. In February of 1991, she was elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, representing the First Supervisorial District. Ms. Molina is the first Latina in history to be elected to the California State Legislature, the Los Angeles City Council, and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Mel Martinez, Senator

Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL), the first Cuban-American to serve in the United States Senate gave the keynote address at the Latino Leaders Luncheon on March 5th. Senator Martinez was elected as Senator for Florida in 2005 and is also the former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President George W. Bush. Martinez graduated from Florida State University College of Law in 1973. During his 25 years of law practice in Orlando, he was actively involved in community activities. Martinez arrived in the United States from Cuba in 1962 fleeing the Communist dictatorship. He was one of over 14,000 Cuban children in Operation Pedro Pan, a Catholic humanitarian effort that helped bring Cuban children to freedom.
