The learning activities engage students to learn about, relate to, connect with, and act upon the powerful stories of Latino leaders in contemporary society.

On Friday, Sandoval, now working as MGM’s president of global gaming development, was given the Eagle Leadership Award by the Latino Leaders Network. The award, offered to leaders whose achievements the organization credits with making “a significant impact on the lives of Latinos living in the United States,” is given out quarterly. Previous winners include musician Emilio Estefan, former U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and journalist Alfredo Corchado.

“It’s overwhelming,” Sandoval told the Nevada Independent before addressing just under 300 attendees – including U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto and 2020 Democrat presidential hopeful Julian Castro. “A true honor.”

The Latino Leaders Network awarded the prestigious Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership distinction to the Mayor of Houston, Texas, Sylvester Turner at the Tribute to Mayors event held at the Mayflower Hotel on January 23.

Hon. Mickey Ibarra, Director of the Latino Leaders Network, began the ceremony recalling the Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership Award history and indicated that its goal is to acknowledge the work of outstanding mayors dedicated to the inclusion of their diverse communities.

The series started in 2004, and Ibarra said one of the highlights was hearing from Rep. Joaquín Castro, twin of Julián Castro, former secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Barack Obama.“These two twins being raised by a single mother in San Antonio, it’s inspirational,” Ibarra said.

For Sylvia Mendez, recipient of the Eagle Leadership Award, it all started with a playground. The elementary school she attended in Westminster, California, in 1944 didn’t have one; that was a luxury reserved for the white schools. Instead, Mendez remembers that the “Mexican school” where she and her siblings were forced to study had a dirt yard, lined with an electric wire fence to keep the children away from a cow pasture next door.

Mickey -- a respected DC operative who first rose to fame during the Clinton administration -- now has an organization that gathers Latino leaders in different contexts and venues to tell their stories for the benefit of other Latinos.  When I first learned this, I was reminded of the strategy that Cesar Chavez employed to recruit leaders in his movement: ask them to tell their own stories and how their stories might map to the organization. Individual-to-group storytelling is actually an ancient practice, but modern-day practitioners like Ibarra are empowering people to organize today.

The Honorable Mickey Ibarra will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Mesa Latino Town Hall Awards ceremony sponsored by the Mesa Association of Hispanic Citizens Oct. 27 at the Mesa Arts Center. Ibarra is the president of the Ibarra Strategy Group, a government relations and public affairs firm based in Washington, D.C. He also founded and is chairman of the Latino Leaders Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ‘Bringing Leaders Together” to establish relationships, build unity and share personal stories.
